Women’s Basketball To Compete Against Alabama State Inside H&PE Arena

•The Texas Southern women’s basketball team is back in action in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play against Alabama State on Monday inside the H&PE Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

•Texas Southern (4-14 Overall, 3-4 SWAC) is coming off a 61-55 win against Alabama A&M on Saturday as Jaida Belton had a career-high 24 points and 18 rebounds.

•Alabama State (1-16, 1-5) is currently on a five game losing streak with its last loss being at Prairie View, 46-43. Cordasia Harris led Alabama State with 10 points and seven rebounds.

•ASU was predicted to finish fifth in the SWAC Preseason Poll. The Hornets are led by Harris, as she is averaging 11.6 points and 8.1 boards.

•Taniyah Lawson leads the Tigers offense as she is averaging 11.4 points and 3.0 rebounds.

•TSU is 3-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points, 2-0 when shooting over 50 percent  from field, and 1-0 when wearing gray jerseys.

•Belton is the second leading blocker in the SWAC having 33 in 18 games played. Additionally, she’s had five games with three or more blocks, being against Old Dominion, Rice, Tarleton, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Alabama A&M.

•Daeja Holmes has had three 20+ point games this season against North American, California Baptist, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

•The Tigers will have a lot to prove as they were selected to finish 11th in the Preseason SWAC Predicted Order of Finish.

•The Tigers brought in nine newcomers this year. However, they’ve lost nine letterwinners and feature a pair of new assistant coaches.
