Volleyball Falls In Emotional Match To Southern 3-2

Texas Southern and Southern went down to the wire as the Lady Tigers dropped their home finale by a 3-2 margin Monday night inside the H&PE Arena.

Set one was a preview of what to expect as both teams refused to break away from each other throughout the set. Each team responded when its backs were against the wall but TSU came out on top with the set tied at 26-all as Danielle Lilley broke the tie with a kill followed by Kaitlyn Scroggins’ ace to win 28-26.

TSU came out on fire to begin set two as they led 7-3 before upping the lead to 10-5 after Amber Johnson’s kill. TSU led by as much as six (16-10) but Southern inched back into the contest after three consecutive kills to trail 16-14. TSU would respond and push its lead back to 20-15 and never looked back as they closed out set two 25-20.

Southern jumped ahead 6-0 in set three but TSU regrouped and closed to within 7-5 after a pair of TSU blocks. Southern would take advantage of several TSU attack errors and remained hot as they went on a 15-4 run to lead 22-9. TSU attempted to make a late comeback as they closed to within four points after a team effort but the margin was too much to overcome as SU won set three 25-20.

The fourth set was a carbon copy of set one as TSU battled back from a 22-19 deficit to knot the set at 22-all after a Thalia Cordero Moreno kill, an Aeris Ramsey ace and Janiya Chapman kill. The teams would need extra points once again to settle the affair as SU would knot the match at 2-all after a pair of TSU attack errors to close out the set.

TSU controlled the final set early on as they led 8-3 but the Jaguars went on an 8-3 run to tie the set at 11-all which was aided by six TSU attack errors. TSU would move ahead 12-11 after Jada Hall’s kill but a service error allowed SU to knot the set at 12-all. Southern moved ahead 14-12 after a Kendall Dutton kill and another TSU attack error but TSU continued to fight after Amber Johnson’s kill which cut the deficit to 14-13. Both teams would have a long volley with the match on the line but Dutton once again closed the lid with a cross court kill to seal the match 3-2.

Cordero Moreno led TSU with 17 kills and 15 digs followed by 10 kills from Hall. Ramsey had 21 assists and 14 digs while Dallas Balanay-Flores added 18.

TSU is back in action Thursday night at Prairie View A&M for a 6 p.m. start.
