Softball Drops Midweek Doubleheader At Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas Southern softball dropped a midweek doubleheader to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday afternoon at Chapman Field.
TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 5, TSU 3
In game one, Naomi Reyes struck out nine batters but it wasn’t enough unfortunately as the Islanders used a three-run third inning to propel them to a 5-3 win in the opener.
The Islanders scored the game’s first run in the second but TSU answered in the third as Ja’Lynn Swiney led the inning off with a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on an Islander throwing error. The tie was brief however as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi plated three runs in the third as they were aided by three TSU walks.
The scoring would cease until the sixth by both teams as TSU closed the gap to 4-2 after Gabrielle Loui drew a bases loaded walk after battling back from an 0-2 deficit. However, the Islanders answered back in the bottom frame with an RBI double. TSU made things interesting in the final inning as Swiney led off with a walk followed by a single from Pamela Richardson. A sac bunt moved both runners over which paved the way for Aubri Ford’s RBI as Swiney cut the lead to 5-3 deficit with two outs. Julia Bilbao was hit by a pitch and became the eventual tying run but the rally fell short after a game-ending grounder.
Naomi Reyes struck out nine in 5.1 innings of action as she fell to 0-2 on the season. Swiney scored twice while Crimson Davis, Loui and Richardson accounted for hits.
TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 7, TSU 1
The Islanders combined to score nine runs over the first two innings and never looked back as they captured the doubleheader by a 7-1 margin.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi opened the first inning with three consecutive hits and a walk to set the tone before scoring on a sac fly. They would score three more times on RBI singles en route to a 4-0 lead. They would add a run in the second for a 5-0 margin as TSU found the scoreboard in the fourth as Ashlin Moreno scored on an error during a Deana Zuniga stolen base attempt. In the sixth, TSU’s Ashling Shahan opened the inning with a leadoff single and stole second. Moreno drew a four-pitch walk but a double play and foul out end ended the promising inning. The Islanders would add two more runs in the sixth for the final margin.
Jazmine Gendorf fell to 0-1 on the season as she pitched 5.1 innings with three strikeouts. Shahan and Emma Ortiz each had hits for TSU.
TSU starts a three-game homestand Saturday afternoon as they’ll host Abilene Christian at Memorial Park in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
