Lazo Hits Second Homer Of The Season In Loss To Rice

Jason Lazo hit his second homer of the season, but the Texas Southern University baseball team fell 16-5 against Rice University on Tuesday afternoon at Cameron Field.

The Tigers (21-23) came up with four runs at the top of the first as Cj Castillo and Nasir Frederick walked, then Tyler Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a pitcher change by the Owls, and with one out, Castillo stole home to put the Tigers on the board early. The rally continued after Nin Burns, ll singled for two RBIs. Burns, ll advanced to second on a sac-bunt by Edmundo Alanis and moved up again on a wild pitch. Burns ll reached home on Johnathan Trejo’s single.

Rice (22-31) cut the deficit in half at the bottom of the second but came up with a big third inning, scoring eight runs on six hits. The Owls put the game away with the ten-run rule, adding five runs on six hits at the bottom of the sixth.

James Malone (1-3) took the loss for TSU as he was tagged for five runs. Notably, Joseph Villarreal pitched two innings of relief and struck out three batters while only giving up one run. Mark Perkins (2-0) picked up the win for the Owls in three innings, while striking out three.
