Texas Southern University baseball player Michael Villanueva was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week for his performance over the past week of the regular season.
Villanueva, a sophomore from Baytown, Texas, pitched a complete-game no-hitter in the second half of a double-header Saturday to give TSU a sweep of in-state rival Prairie View A&M. Villanueva struck out 13 batters over seven innings, and allowed only one PV player to reach base, via a walk.
It was the first no-hitter of Villanueva's career, and believed to be the first no-hitter by a TSU pitcher since the 1980s.
The 6-foot-3 pitcher also tossed an inning in each of TSU's games at Oklahoma earlier in the week, allowing only one earned run during those two games. For the week, Villanueva had a 1.00 ERA and allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out 14 over nine innings.
