HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Tigers football team grinded out a hard fought 27-10 victory over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions on Saturday.
Led by a staunch rushing attack TSU was able to score 20 first half points two of which were accounted for by quarterback Johnathan Bowen.
After a scoreless 1st quarter TSU's Bowen rushed for a 6-yard TD to open the scoring for the Tigers. Bowen would later find wide receiver Tracy Johnson for a 59-yard score at the 54 second mark of the 2nd quarter.
Two Eric Medina field goals were sandwiched in between the Tigers first half TD's giving TSU a 20-0 advantage going into the break.
In the second half it was more of the same hard running by the dynamic duo of Brad Woodard and Tylor Cook that helped the Tigers control the momentum of the contest. Woodard rushed the ball 28 times for 117 yards while Cook amassed 101 yards on 8 carries.
Place kicker remained perfect on the season in field goals while also adding another interesting addition to the stat line of a kicker. Medina connected on 34-yard TD strike to Elie Nabushosi on a fake field goal to put the Tigers up by a score of 27-7 subsequently ending any hopes of a UAPB comeback attempt.
Defensively TSU was led in tackles by Zaphir Murphy who racked up 11 stops on the day. Dondre Dobbins picked up his third interception of the year while the TSU defensive front got after the Golden Lions QB tallying 3 sacks.
Texas Southern closes out the 2016 campaign next week (Nov. 19) with Senior Day and a meeting with one of the SWAC's two undefeated teams, the Grambling State Tigers.
