Montgomery, Ala.- The Alabama State Hornets triumphed over Texas Southern with a score of 9-2, largely due to a six-run surge in the fourth inning.
The Hornets initially took the lead in the first inning when Wilbert Espinal drew a walk, scoring one run. Texas Southern responded in the second inning, capturing a 2-1 lead after Daylon Carlton's sacrifice fly and Jonathan Trejo's single down the right field line, each driving in a run.
The game shifted dramatically in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alabama State Hornets scored six runs on five hits, taking a commanding 7-2 lead. A critical error in the inning drove in two runs, contributing significantly to the Hornets' advantage.
Esaid Peña secured the win for Alabama State Hornets, pitching six innings and allowing six hits and two runs while striking out four and walking none. Justin Mays took the loss for Texas Southern, pitching three and two-thirds innings and surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, with two strikeouts and three walks.
Carlton and Trejo each contributed one run for Texas Southern, while Bryce Hughes led the team in hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Texas Southern executed one double play during the game.
Alabama State Hornets amassed 12 hits, with Espinal leading the lineup with three runs batted in, despite going 1-for-4. Isaiah Landry, Juan Cruz, and Kelvin Agosto each collected two hits. The Hornets turned two double plays and committed no errors in the field, with Cruz having the most chances with nine.
