HOUSTON, Tx — Southern University erased a three-run deficit in the ninth inning with a go-ahead home run and held off Texas Southern for a 9-8 comeback win on Saturday, clinching Game 2 of their three-game weekend series.
Tied 5-5 through seven innings, Texas Southern surged ahead in the bottom of the seventh. Jonathan Trejo broke the tie with an RBI single to right, and Kelton Phillips followed with a two-run single to give the Tigers an 8-5 lead.
Right-hander Isaac Garcia entered in the eighth and retired the Jaguars in order, preserving the lead heading into the ninth. But Southern responded with a walk and a two-run homer to right field, flipping the score 9-8.
Texas Southern was unable to answer in the bottom of the ninth, stranding the potential tying run and falling short in a game they had led late.
Southern opened the game with a 3-2 lead after the first inning, but the Tigers clawed back. Jaden Jones delivered a two-run double in the fourth to give TSU a 5-4 lead. Southern tied it again in the sixth before the Tigers' seventh-inning rally.
TSU starter Mayes was effective through the middle innings, retiring the side in order in the fifth and keeping the Jaguars off the board in the third. Offensively, Flores, Jones, and Phillips helped pace the Tigers, but the late-inning collapse proved costly.
The series concludes Sunday, with Texas Southern looking to avoid a sweep.
