BATON ROUGE, La. – Texas Southern softball had a tough weekend as Southern claimed two-of-three games.
SOUTHERN 6, TSU 5 (9)
TSU battled back from a four-run deficit late but surrendered two late runs as SU claimed a 5-4 win in extra innings.
A fielding error allowed three runs to score in the second followed by a single for an early 4-0 Jaguar lead. TSU would chip away from that point as Karisma Garcia drove in a run in the third and the defense kept SU off the board.
TSU broke through in the sixth as Da'Nia Durr drove home Lanay Carr for a 4-2 margin followed by an RBI from Penelope Saenz as the score was trimmed to 4-3. Garcia's sac fly in the seventh tied it at 4-all and Marissa Martinez's RBI double moved TSU ahead 5-4. Southern would hit back-to-back one-out doubles in the seventh and tied it at 5-all with a two-out sac fly.
The score would remain tied until the ninth as SU drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Unfortunately, the game would end with a hit batter as SU scored the winning run as a result.
SOUTHERN 5, TSU 4
Southern held on a for 5-4 win on Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader.
Lanay Carr's RBI single gave TSU the first run of the game but SU moved ahead 4-1 after three innings of play. Kylee Wilson cut the deficit in half to 4-2 with an RBI in the fourth and added a sac fly in the sixth for a 4-3 margin.
A critical fielding error in the sixth with two outs moved SU ahead 5-3 as the run came back to haunt the Tigers in the seventh. DaNia Durr cut the score to 5-4 after a solo homer and Penelope Saenz would represent the tying run with a double but that would be the furthest, she would get as SU forced the game-ending groundout.
TSU 8, SU 1
After a pair of frustrating losses, TSU closed out the series strong with an 8-1 win in game two.
TSU scored the game's first four runs as Marissa Martinez, Penelope Saenz and Lanay Carr all had an RBI. Southern cut it to 4-1 after the fifth but TSU put the game away in the seventh with a four-run frame.
Carr and Martinez both had two hits while Wilson struck out four in a complete-game effort.
TSU is back in action on Friday at Memorial Park against Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m.
