DALLAS – The SMU Mustangs built a 12-point halftime lead and then scored 12 of the second half's first 15 points Monday as they went on to claim a 61-36 win over Texas Southern.
Alicia Froling and Kiara Perry scored 12 points and 11 points, respectively, for the Mustangs (8-4), who extended Texas Southern's losing streak to three games.
Kaitlyn Palmer scored a team-high 12 points for the Lady Tigers, who fell to 5-5. The team's last two losses in the Metroplex on Sunday and Monday came against teams from high-RPI conferences.
The Mustangs led 18-9 after one quarter, but the visiting Lady Tigers stayed within striking range of their hosts by holding SMU to 22 percent shooting (2 of 9) from the floor during the second 10 minutes. SMU took a 26-14 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw the Mustangs stretch their lead to 38-17 over the first three minutes and third seconds of the period. A 3-pointer by Palmer – one of the three she drained Monday – was TSU's lone basket during that run.
Katelynn Johnson and Joyce Kennerson scored seven points apiece for the Lady Tigers. Artavia Ford chipped in six points, three blocked shots and four steals for Texas Southern.
The Lady Tigers return to action Wednesday when they conclude their non-conference schedule at Florida International in Miami. Tipoff between TSU and the 1-7 Panthers is scheduled for noon EST, 11 a.m. Central Standard Time.
