HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State jumped out to an early lead and never trailed as the Bearkats turned away visiting Texas Southern by a score of 5-1 on Tuesday.
Codi Carpenter's RBI double in the bottom of the first inning highlighted a two-run inning for the Bearkats (12-11), who sent the Lady Tigers to their third consecutive defeat.
Gisella Paranich knocked a solo home run (her first of the season) in the top of the third inning to cut TSU's deficit to 2-1. The Lady Tigers fell to 7-6 in their final contest before their Southwestern Athletic Conference opening series this weekend.
SHSU's Taylor Atkinson pitched five innings and struck out six batters while allowing only two hits en route to the victory; Lindsey McLeod tossed the final two innings for the home team to pick up the save.
Tiffany Marshall pitched five and two-thirds innings for Texas Southern, allowing four earned runs and eight hits while striking out a batter. Kreola Moore pitched the final two outs for the Lady Tigers, with one strikeout.
Dominique Tello knocked TSU's only two other hits, including a first-inning double with two outs.
The Lady Tigers open SWAC play this weekend when they travel to Huntsville, Ala., to face Alabama A&M. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m., with the series to conclude with a doubleheader Saturday.
