
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Naomi Reyes' no-hitter highlighted the opening day of the Islander Classic as Texas Southern softball split a pair of games.
TSU 2, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0
Naomi Reyes tossed a no-hitter while Daryn Haslam and Haley Castro drove in RBIs as TSU defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2-0 Friday afternoon.
It was a pitching duel until the fifth as Mila Rodriguez drew a one out walk and was pinch ran by Emma Ortiz. A'Leccia Bell moved Ortiz over to second following a single as Ortiz would score the game's first run on Haley Castro's RBI double to center. In the bottom of the sixth, Daryn Haslam hit a solo shot for an insurance run as Reyes sent the Islanders down 1-2-3 for the win in the seventh.
Crimson Davis went 2-for-2 at the plate as Bell, Castro and Haslam recorded hits. Reyes improved to 2-3 on the year as she struck out seven.
NORTH TEXAS 8, TSU 1
UNT scored four times in the first en route to handing TSU an 8-1 loss on Friday.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, UNT received new life as TSU hit a batter followed by an error which allowed the runner to score for a 1-0 lead. UNT stole a pair of bases for a 2-0 margin and added two more runs on a home run.
TSU had runners in scoring position in the third but failed to capitalize as its deficit grew to 5-0 after the fourth. The Tigers would cross home a run in the fifth to get within four runs but UNT added three more runs in the sixth to put the game away.
Ashling Shahan finished 2-for-3 with an RBI while Emma Ortiz also batted 2-for-3. Chelsea Baxter fell to 2-4 on the year with the loss on the mound.
TSU will face UNT once again at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3:30 p.m.
