The Texas Southern women’s basketball team had a low scoring second quarter as it proved costly in a 57-38 loss to Old Dominion Friday morning in Norfolk, Va.
The first quarter was as close as a nine point tie with 4:24 remaining. The Monarchs closed the period out on a 7-2 run as they led 16-11 going into the second. Sophomore forward Jaida Belton tallied six of her eight points in the first quarter while adding eight rebounds.
Jordyn Turner opened the second quarter with a layup, however that would be it for scoring in the second quarter for TSU as they were outscored 15-2, trailing 31-13 going into the third. The Monarchs continued what would be an 18-0 run into the third quarter which was halted at 8:30 after a free throw by Alisa Knight.
It was a low scoring third quarter on both teams as Taniya Lawson scored six of seven points for the Tigers in that period as the team shot 3-of-18 from the field. ODU went 3-of-12 as they would put up nine points to keep a 20 point lead (40-20) heading into the final period.
Texas Southern won the final quarter 18-17, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 57-38.
The Tigers were paced by Taniya Lawson who recorded 13 points.
