History
Texas Southern women's basketball started off strong and picked it up at the end as they remained undefeated in SWAC play after an 82-69 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers came out with high energy and determination, quickly establishing their dominance. Tiana Mathis scored a driving layup, and Deivejon Harris contributed significantly. By the end of the first quarter, Texas Southern had built a solid advantage as they closed the final five minutes on a 16-7 run, leading 26-15.
In the second quarter, Texas Southern continued to build on their lead but Prairie View A&M refused to back down as they opened the quarter on a 11-4 run to draw within 30-26 with 5:30 left. Jaida Belton's basket would up it back to 32-26 as TSU outscored PVAMU 10-3 over the next three minutes for a double-digit lead at 40-39 at the 2:13 mark. Texas Southern's defense was also effective from that point as they maintained their lead, 48-36, at the half.
The third quarter saw PVAMU close the margin to nine at 55-46 with 3:45 left but the Tigers used a team effort as six players would score to close out the quarter. TSU shot 60 percent from the field during that span and forced three PVAMU turnovers as a 13-6 run towards the end of the third stanza gave them a 68-50 lead.
TSU would need every ounce of its 18-point lead entering the final quarter as Prairie View A&M chipped away and found itself down only seven (75-68) with 1:20 left.
Texas Southern's Treasure Thompson scored a much-needed layup 16 seconds later and a steal by Belton saw her score for a 79-68 advantage. TSU would close out the next 45 seconds on a 7-1 run to secure its second straight win over Prairie View A&M by 13 points.
With the game televised on HBCU GO, Belton had another memorable nationally televised performance for the second straight season on the channel with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Loudermill added 14 while Thompson scored 11. Deivejon Harris finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Aylasia Fantroy added 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.
"It's a family culture here and it feels good to know our fans have our back," said Belton.
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Tuesday in Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. for a make-up contest.
