Softball Sweeps Houston-Victoria Tuesday Afternoon
VICTORIA, Texas – Texas Southern combined for 23 hits as they swept a doubleheader against Houston-Victoria Tuesday afternoon.
TSU 3, UHV 1
TSU scored three times in the top of the first and rode the arm of reigning SWAC Pitcher of the Week Naomi Reyes’ nine strikeouts to win the opener 3-1.
Ashling Shahan drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single in the first as Crimson Davis scored. A UHV error on Tevanae Tate’s at-bat led to a pair of additional runs as TSU claimed an early 3-0 lead.
From there, it was all on Reyes as she avoided an early jam in the first inning and finished with nine strikeouts. Malea Rodriguez was called on to finish the game in the seventh and ran into early trouble as UHV scored its first run with two outs. An error allowed two runners on base but TSU regrouped and threw out the go-ahead runner at third to seal the win.
Davis, Mila Rodriguez and Haley Castro all finished with two hits as Tate led the way with two RBI. Reyes tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts.
TSU 9, UHV 2
Crimson Davis batted 3-for-3 with two runs as TSU erupted for 14 hits in a 9-2 win over the Jaguars.
Davis opened the first with a leadoff single and moved to second on Zariah Robins’ bunt single. Both runners stole a base and scored after Daryn Haslam hit an RBI triple for a 2-0 lead. Mila Rodriguez drove in Haslam for a 3-0 TSU lead after the top of the first. Tevanae Tate drove in TSU’s fourth run with an RBI triple in the third but UHV cut the deficit to 3-1 after crossing home a run in the bottom half.
The Tigers went back to work at the plate in the fourth and sixth frames by combining for five runs as Julia Bilbao drew a bases loaded walk followed by RBIs from Haslam (2) and Tate (2).
Jazmine Gendorf picked up her first collegiate win as she went five innings. Tate finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.
TSU is back in action on Saturday at Lamar for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
