Soccer Uses Big Second Half To Defeat Mississippi Valley State

The Texas Southern University soccer team picked up where they left off Friday night with a pair of second half goals as they defeated Mississippi Valley State 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Durley Stadium.

TSU had numerous opportunities to score in the first half as they kept MVSU goal keeper McKenzie McCarthy on her toes with a total of 13 shots. However, the ball wouldn’t find the goal as both teams went into the half with a scoreless tie.

The tide of the game turned in the second half as TSU wore down Mississippi Valley’s midfield and applied extra pressure on the MVSU defense. In the 60th minute, Cassandra Sandoval broke through the MVSU defense with two solid looks but McCarthy blocked both shots. However, Desiree Harte was in position after the second block was deflected to her and scored the first goal of the match.

TSU would have six more shot attempts after the goal and connected on the seventh as Jada MacLean received a clean pass from Sandoval and scored a breakaway goal en route to her first score and the team’s final goal of the afternoon in the 82nd minute.

Maclean led TSU with six shots followed by four attempts from Crisley Pavon. Salma Ghazal logged five saves at the goalie position.

The team will embark on a five-game road trip over the next three weekends. The trip starts off with Howard University on Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
