Track & Field Teams Open 2024 SWAC Championships At Southern
BATON ROUGE, La. – The 2024 SWAC Track & Field Championships kicked off Thursday morning on the Southern University campus.
On the women’s side, Ryann Richards won the team’s first medal as she earned a third-place finish in the pole vault while Morgan Haywood followed with a fourth-place finish. Gianna Trotter earned points with a seventh-place finish in the javelin.
On the track, Jessica Williams placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run.
In the prelims of the sprints, Desirae Roberts advanced to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles.
The women’s team currently stands in fourth after five scored events with 18 points.
On the men’s side, Jose Gonzalez and Jalen Walker brought home the gold after the first day of men’s competition.
Gonzalez won the 10,000 in a time of 32:26.22 while Jeremiah Barrera earned points with a seventh-place finish. Gonzalez also qualified for the finals of the 1,500-meter run as he finished eighth.
Walker continued his strong performance on the season with a first-place throw of 169-8 feet to win the hammer. He was joined by Blaine Nunn’s third-place throw of 158-01. Chadrick Williams finished second in the javelin after logging a mark of 190-01. TSU also picked up additional points in the event as Jaden Brooks (163-04) and Malachi Byrd (150-03) placed sixth and eighth, respectively.
The men’s team currently leads the event after five scored events with 40 points.
