Texas Southern Wins 2023-24 SWAC Academic Success Award, 162 Named To Commissioner’s Honor Roll
Less than a week after claiming the SWAC’s C.D. Henry Award, the Texas Southern Department of Athletics had an academic milestone as the winner of the SWAC’s 2023-24 Academic Success Award for the second time in three years.
The SWAC Academic Success Award is an award decided based upon each member institutions collective ranking in the categories of highest four-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) average, highest single year APR average, and highest Graduate Success Rate (GSR). TSU claimed the Academic Success Award finishing with a total of 30 points based upon the point scale system used to determine an institutional winner. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (28.0) and Grambling State (27.5) round out the list of top three finishers within the conference. TSU also won the award following the 2021-22 academic year.
“Words can’t describe how it feels to cap off the academic year with this type of news,” said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger. “It’s an honor and privilege to be number one in the SWAC when it comes to academic success. It’s also a huge testament to the hard work our Board of Regents, President’s office, faculty and staff, compliance department, academic staff, coaches and student-athletes have put in throughout the academic year.”
In addition to the Academic Success Award, TSU also fared well in the latest SWAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll report. TSU had a total of 162 student-athletes named to the honor roll as student-athletes had to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters.
The TSU baseball team led the way with 28 student-athletes earning 3.0 or higher GPA’s followed by football (21), soccer (20) and women’s track & field/cross country (19).
