Softball Wins Road Series At Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – The TSU softball team won its first SWAC series of the year as they defeated Alcorn State in contrasting fashions by a 2-0, 11-3 margin on Saturday.

ALCORN STATE 2, TSU 0

Alcorn State scored a pair of runs in the third and sixth innings and held off a pair of potential late-inning TSU rallies for a 2-0 win in the opener.

ASU hit a one-out single in the third and the runner moved to second after a TSU throwing error. The error came back to haunt TSU as ASU hit an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

TSU had a runner on second in the fourth with one out but couldn’t capitalize with a strike out and fly out. In the sixth, TSU’s Daryn Haslam led the inning off with a double followed by an Angel Morales walk. However, TSU couldn’t drive in a run with three straight outs.

ASU opened the sixth with a single and the runner moved to third after a TSU throwing error on the next at-bat. A single by ASU on its next at-bat led to the game’s second run.

TSU’s Haley Castro opened the seventh with a leadoff walk and moved to second after Pam Richardson’s one-out walk. However, TSU couldn’t drive home the potential tying runs as the next at-bats ended in an infield fly and a flyout to right field.

Haslam, Morales and Jayda Carter all had hits for TSU while Lailah Bell went the distance but was tagged with the loss.

TSU 11, ALCORN STATE 3

The TSU bats finally woke up in the second game as they used a nine-run third for an 11-3 win.

Haslam’s RBI double in the first scored Madison Martinez, who reached base on a walk. Haslam scored on Angel Morales’ RBI for an early 2-0 lead. ASU answered TSU’s early scores with two of its own in the first and moved ahead 3-2 after scoring in the second.

TSU finally had the inning they’ve been waiting on since the season began in the third as Martinez led off with a walk and scored on an ASU error. Errors allowed TSU to load the bases and Madison Battle’s RBI single scored Daryn Haslam. Jayda Carter hit an RBI single for a 5-3 lead which sparked an ASU pitching change.

The change didn’t matter as Haley Castro drew a bases loaded walk followed by Deana Zuniga’s two-RBI single. Angel Morales’ two RBI single upped the score to 10-3 followed by Marissa Martinez’s RBI single.

TSU never looked back from that point as Melonie Guardiola cruised to the win on the mound.

Zuniga went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run while Haslam finished 2-for-3 with three runs.

TSU is back in action on Friday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Memorial Park in Houston for a 3 p.m. start.
