Softball Wins Home Opener
The Texas Southern University softball team used a pair of two-run innings to defeat visiting University of St. Thomas 4-1 at Memorial Park on Thursday afternoon.
Marissa Martinez got the Tigers on the scoreboard first when she reached base by way of an error at third to score Lanay Carr, who led off the inning with a triple. Ja’Lynn Swiney added to the lead when her RBI single to left field brought in Martinez to give TSU (2-10) a 2-0 lead heading into the third inning.
St. Thomas (7-4) loaded the basepaths with Tigers to start the bottom of the third before Carr’s sacrifice fly to left scored Daryn Haslam from third. An out later, Martinez singled to push across Jayda Carter extend TSU’s lead to 4-0.
St. Thomas’ Chloe Bennett belted a solo homerun in the top of the fifth. The home run for Bennett was the third on the season in just 11 games.
Martinez led the Tigers offensively with a 2-for-3 outing with two runs batted in and a scored run.
Jazmine Gendorf got the win in the circle going two innings with no runs or hits along with one strikeout.
UP NEXT
The Tigers are off this weekend and will be preparing for their first SWAC road trip of the season when they cross over into Louisiana to take on Grambling State University in a three-game set beginning at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, Mar. 10 and then again in a doubleheader the following afternoon.
