Soccer Falls In Final Minutes To Prairie View A&M

A late goal in the final two minutes broke a tie as Texas Southern soccer dropped their 2022 regular season finale by a 2-1 margin to Prairie View A&M.

The Tigers kicked off their final home match of the season by honoring their six graduating players in Stephanie Robles, Evan Melton, Ashley Arnes, Ari Mendez, Joniyah (JJ) Binder, and Jaidyn Christophe.

Junior Victoria Pucci shot right into the action with a corner kick within the first minute of the match. Graduate student Savannah Keziah was right behind with a shot attempt in the second minute. The team had possession of the ball for the majority of the first half with Pucci posting three more shot attempts, and corner kicks by graduate student Chloe Robinson, JJ Binder, and Stephanie Robles.  The Tigers scored the opening goal for the match when sophomore Hayden McMillan scored in the 33rd minute for a 1-0 lead.

The back end of the first half saw several more shots by Pucci, sophomore Simone Sheridan and Liz Alberto, Arnes, McMillan, Sheridan, Binder, and Vaughan.

Texas Southern started the second half with a strong offensive side with multiple goal attempts. Prairie View scored their first goal during the 68th minute but the Tigers had plenty of opportunities to counter as Arnes, Pucci, Mendez, Taylor and McMillan all had shot attempts.

With 2:40 left, TSU received the worst news possible as a red card led to the removal of its goalie. As a result, TSU was forced to insert another goalie prior to a PVAMU penalty kick. PVAMU missed the initial kick but retained the ball on a throw in. After the throw in, PVAMU had another attempt which fell short but the ball landed back in front of another PVAMU player who scored for the 2-1 margin.

The Tigers return to action next Thursday, Nov. 3 as they compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship at Prairie View A&M. The time and opponent will be announced Sunday at the latest.
