HOUSTON- The Texas Southern University football program has announced that offensive coordinator Greg Gregory and defensive line coach Walter Moreham will not be retained heading into the Tigers 2018 season.
Gregory joined the program in 2016 also serving as quarterbacks coach. During the 2017 campaign Texas Southern ranked 7th in scoring offense in the Southwestern Athletic Conference while ranking 8th in total offense.
Moreham, who also joined the program for the start of the 2016 season led a Tigers defensive front that ranked 8th in sacks as well as 8th in rushing defense.
"We want to thank Coach Gregory and Coach Moreham for their tireless efforts over the course of the past two seasons coaching and mentoring our student-athletes here at TSU," said Texas Southern head coach Michael Haywood.
"Decisions of this nature are never easy and always require a lot of due diligence on our behalf but we feel these changes are necessary for us to continue to move the program forward and headed in the right direction."
"As with all programs across the country aspiring to improve while moving further towards the goal of competing for championships on a yearly basis it was clear that some changes needed to be made during the course of the offseason," said TSU Vice President of Athletics Dr. Charles McClelland.
"Going into next season Coach Haywood obviously wants to make the changes needed for the football program to continue to mature and grow under his leadership and this is a part of the overall staff analysis that coaches at all levels must do on an annual basis," added McClelland.
A search to fill the two coaching vacancies on the Tigers staff will begin immediately.
