BEAUMONT, Texas – Texas Southern University's department of athletics remembers the life of former football player Warren Wells, who passed away Dec. 28 in Beaumont at the age of 76.
Gifted on the football and in the classroom, the speedy wide receiver Wells played for head coach Alexander Durley. Wells was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1964, and after a stint in the U.S. Army, returned to the football field, this time as a member of the American Football League's Oakland Raiders.
In four seasons with the Raiders, Wells averaged more than 20 yards per catch in each season. He was an AFL All-Star in 1968, and an AFC-NFC All-Pro in 1970 following the merger of the AFL and NFL.
Wells was a member of the 1967 Raiders squad that won the AFL championship and faced the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II. The following year, he led the AFL in touchdowns and finished fourth in the league in receiving yards with 1,137.
TSU pays tribute to a former Tiger who accomplished much on and off the field, and was inspiration to all who knew him.
