On game versus Southern
"First of all I have to commend Coach Odom and his team, they came in and played a good game against us especially on defense and special teams, they ended up blocking a kick. We had a mental error and they ended up coming and blocking the kick, taking advantage of some of the mistakes in which we made. Defense played outstanding, that front four of theirs is the best we've faced in conference so far this year. They did a tremendous job offensively. Our defense did a really good job against their offense. They moved the ball in the first series of the game in which they had it. They became stagnant until later on in the third or fourth quarter when they ran a little slow go and we were in cover four and the wide receiver just beat the defensive back. The defensive back missed the line, he didn't play he divided and he beat him in the corner of the end zone so they went up 21-0. Then our guys fought back to go 21-7, late in the 4th we intercepted a pass and had the opportunity to go back in and tie it up. We were out of field goal range for our kicker on this day. We decided to fake and they did a nice job against the fake to prevent us from getting a first down. I congratulate Coach Odom and his staff for an outstanding job in which they did and I wish them good luck for the rest of the season."
On team looking for identity
"I wouldn't say that we're looking for our identity, we're looking for the best quarterback to fulfill the role because we were trying to redshirt Devin Williams and trying to get him some experience, but it looks like we're going to have to play him again this week. Thank God for the new rule they put in you can play in any four games and then you can redshirt him. We're still trying to redshirt him, but Devin is starting to rise as the leading quarterback. However, we're still probably going to stick to the way we started last week's game and stick to the same way this week. Again, he's rising as the leading quarterback, but we're still trying to redshirt him."
On key elements to win against Mississippi Valley State
"First thing is we have to stop the quarterback for Mississippi Valley. They've done a great a great job with the young man that they've recruited, he's extremely fleet of foot. He does a nice job running the football, nice job getting around the edge. He's extremely allusive, we missed three tackles on open field players so we're have to do a better job on open field tackling because he's an allusive guy. [Quinn McElfresh] is a good player. We played against him last year and he had to have been player of the week, he had over 200 yards against us last year. We're going to have to do a good job containing him. Then we have to put pressure on this guy when we try to keep him off down and distance, in a term called 'behind the change', not letting him stay up with the change we force him into throwing the football. When he's forcing the football, we have to put pressure on him."
On hard hits from TSU defense
"We're still hearing those clacks. Sean Jones came down, and as Coach Odom talked about #6 being a safety in the secondary, he's a linebacker back there in the secondary. He was coming down and laying some wood, knocked the ball loose the other day. We were knocking balls loose, we just weren't able to recover the ball. I talked to the officials after the game and told them that was the best officiated game that we've had since I've been in the conference for three years and what a tremendous job that they did for the game."
