HOUSTON- What do student-athletes do on the long bus rides during away games? If you're on the Texas Southern University Tigers baseball team, you learn a lot.
The Texas Southern Tigers baseball team recently joined up with the TSU English Department for a one-of-a-kind adventure.
A professor from the English Department traveled on the TSU Athletics bus with the team on March 29th for a three-game series with Grambling State in Louisiana. English Professor Austin James served up two lessons on the bus trip to and from GSU.
The pitches come as fast balls: "How to communicate and partner with your professors" and "Strategies for maximizing learning outcomes." James, taking the field as an academic coach, says, "I'm excited about this partnership and I know the student-athletes are too. These on-the-bus learning experiences will prove invaluable. Everybody hits, everybody gets on base, and everybody wins. Plus, learning's fun."
The outing ranked far from the traditional classroom teaching environment. The road trip was a unique opportunity for athletics and academics to enjoy company, camaraderie, and learning. An education was shared by the student-athletes, professor and the baseball coaching staff.
Yes, the coaches benefited, too. All shared fellowship in appreciation of the common goals of athletics and academics. The campaign to Grambling State University was one to remember and note.
