BATON ROUGE, La. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University continued their winning ways Wednesday with an 82-74 win at Southern.

Zach Lofton scored a game-high 22 points to lead four TSU players scoring in double figures. Lofton scored most of his points at the free throw line, where he made 14 out of 15 attempts.

The win improved Texas Southern (6-9) to 2-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Southern (5-10) fell to 1-1 in league games.

Demontrae Jefferson scored 18 points for the Tigers, followed by Marvin Jones' 16 points. Jones was 5-of-6 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Kevin Scott chipped in 13 points for Texas Southern.

Trelun Banks and Jared Sam scored 19 points apiece for the Jaguars.

Texas Southern briefly pulled away from the host Jaguars with a 13-3 run between the 12:03 and 8:05 marks of the second period to take a 63-53 lead. Dulani Robinson scored of his six points for TSU during that span, and Jefferson knocked down a big 3-pointer to stretch TSU's lead to 61-53 with 8:23 remaining in the game.

The 10-point advantage would provide a cushion as the Jaguars made a late comeback attempt. Southern would trim the TSU lead to 70-68 with 2:43 remaining in the game, but the Tigers would score the next six points to retake an eight-point lead with 57 seconds left to play.

Texas Southern took care of business at the free throw line, where they made 33 out of their 38 attempts, good for an 86-percent showing. Southern made 73 percent (19 of 26) of their free throws.

The Tigers visit in-state rival Prairie View A&M on Saturday. The game will be the second game of a women's-and-men's doubleheader. The women's game is set for 3 p.m., with the men to follow at approximately 5:30 p.m.
