BATON ROUGE, La. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University scored early and often Saturday as they claimed a 8-1 victory at Southern to pick up their first win in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Christian Sanchez hit two home runs for the Tigers while teammate Aaron Solis pitched seven and one-third innings without allowing an earned run as TSU evened its series with the host Jaguars.

The win snapped a seven-game losing for Texas Southern (3-11, 1-1 SWAC), the defending SWAC champion.

Sanchez knocked the first pitch he saw from Southern pitcher Jacob Snyder over the right-centerfield fence to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the first inning.

In the third inning, Sanchez stretched TSU's lead to 3-0 when he knocked another solo home run – this time to left field – in his next at-bat against Snyder. He ended up with RBIs in three consecutive at-bats, adding an RBI double in the fifth inning to score Jose Cabreja.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars had no answer for starting pitcher Solis, who tossed seven scoreless innings before being charged an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth. Solis, a transfer from Wharton County Junior College, scattered only three hits while striking out four batters.

Jose Cabreja knocked two RBIs Saturday, including a sacrifice bunt in the top of the third that scored Kamren Dukes. Dukes had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers. Gaudencio Lucca and Trey LeBlanc also knocked RBIs for Texas Southern.

The Tigers and Jaguars conclude their series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
