BATON ROUGE, La.- Texas Southern's Demontrae Jefferson scored a career-high 36 points, Donte Clark added 28 and Derrick Bruce made two free throws with eight seconds left as TSU held on to edge Southern 90-88 Thursday night to stay in the hunt for a Southwest Athletic Conference title.
Both Texas Southern and Southern were among four teams hot on the heels of SWAC leader Grambling (12-5).
The win keeps the Tigers within range, needing a win at Alcorn State and a Grambling loss as the SWAC's regular season ends on Saturday.
TSU's Jefferson was 14-of-21 from the floor, making 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc.
Texas Southern will now get set to travel to face Alcorn State on Saturday, March 3rd in what will be the Tigers conference regular season finale.
With Thursday's win Texas Southern clinched a top four seed at the upcoming SWAC Tournament. TSU will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 6th at the HPE Arena.
