NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A five-run eighth inning lifted the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks to a 5-4 win over visiting Texas Southern University on Tuesday.
The Tigers had been in control for the duration of the game until the Lumberjacks rallied in the eighth. The non-conference loss was the second such setback in a row for the Tigers (9-16).
TSU's starting pitcher Chris Suarez pitched six and one-third shutout innings for the Tigers, striking out six batters in the process.
Senior catcher Blake Hicks went 2-for-2 with a double and pair of RBIs for the Tigers. His RBI single in the top of the second that scored Keanu Van Kuren opened the scoring; Hicks later doubled in the sixth, again scoring Van Kuren.
Christian Sanchez went 3-for-5 with an RBI for TSU. Teammate Kamren Dukes went 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the ninth inning to cut SFA's lead to 5-4.
The Tigers return to action Thursday when they open a three-game series at Grambling. First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
