History
GULFPORT, Miss. - TSU nearly rallied back from a five-run deficit but its seventh-inning rally fell short to Alabama State in the opening round of the 2025 SWAC Softball Tournament.
ASU drew a leadoff, full-count walk and turned it into a 1-0 lead two batters later after an RBI single in the first. ASU tacked on another run in the second and three in the third for a 5-0 lead. TSU countered with a three-run third as Marissa Martinez led the inning off with a double and scored on Marisa Perla's RBI double, Lanay Carr singled and Perla scored on DaNia Durr's sac fly for a 5-2 score while Penelope Saenz singled as Carr scored for a 5-3 margin. TSU cut the deficit to 5-4 as Kylie Wilson drove in Amerie Martin in the fourth.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, TSU loaded the bases but hit into a game-ending double play.
Saenz finished 3-for-4 while Perla and Martinez both had two hits. Wilson went the distance on the mound as she fell to 8-9.
TSU is back in action at 10:30 a.m. against Grambling State in an elimination contest.
