HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University turned away a spirited challenge from Alabama A&M on Monday as they defeated the visiting Lady Bulldogs 60-51.
Joyce Kennerson poured in 27 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Lady Tigers (13-7), who remained tied with Alabama State atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings with a 7-2 league record. Kennerson shot 9-of-18 from the floor, and made four out of her eight 3-point tries.
Artavia Ford scored 10 points for Texas Southern, followed by Breasia McElrath, who scored eight points and pulled in rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Chynna Ewing scored six points and secured eight rebounds.
Alabama A&M guard Lauren McKee led the Lady Bulldogs (2-16, 0-9 SWAC) with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting. She was 5-of-10 from 3-point range, which included making three out of six long-range attempts in the fourth quarter to keep the Lady Bulldogs within striking distance of their hosts.
The visitors remained winless in 16 games against NCAA and NAIA opponents; the Lady Bulldogs' lone wins this season came at home against Concordia College of Selma (Ala.) and Oakwood, which both compete in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
The Lady Tigers used two 7-0 runs in the first period to establish a comfortable 21-8 lead after the opening 10 minutes. AAMU scored the opening basket before Ford responded with four points and Kennerson knocked down a 3-pointer to give TSU a 7-2 lead barely three minutes into the game.
TSU would later finish the period with seven consecutive points over the final 3:36 of the first quarter. Kennerson had 12 after the opening 10 minutes.
Alabama A&M and its squad of seven freshmen put a bit of a scare into the Lady Tigers in the second quarter, as the Lady Bulldogs used a 10-0 run between the 8:34 and 5:49 marks of the period to cut TSU's lead to 25-21. Hilary Williams scored four of her 14 points during the run, bookending six unanswered points from McKee.
Texas Southern concludes its three-game homestand Saturday when the Lady Tigers host in-state rival Prairie View A&M. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
