HOUSTON – Texas Southern University's Lady Tigers held Alabama State to 18 points in the first half Saturday and then held off a late rally by the Southwestern Athletic Conference's first-place team in a 52-48 over the visiting Lady Hornets.

Freshman guard Chynna Ewing turned in the first double-double performance of her TSU career, scoring 16 points and pulling in a career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Joyce Kennerson scored 15 points for the Lady Tigers (12-7, 6-2 SWAC).

Alabama State forward Britney Wright, the SWAC's second-leading scorer, led the Lady Hornets with 21 points and two blocked shots. Damya Toney came off the bench to score 10 points for ASU (7-11, 6-2 SWAC).

The win pulled TSU and ASU into a first-place tie in the SWAC standings. Southern fell a half-game behind after losing at Alcorn State.

The Lady Tigers outscored ASU 17-5 in the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead into halftime. The lead would prove to be just enough as the Lady Hornets' rally fell short in the fourth quarter. TSU held a seven-point lead with a little more than two minutes to play before three-pointers by Wright and Toney on consecutive possessions trimmed the home team's advantage to 49-48 with 43 seconds left in the game.

On TSU's next trip down the floor, the Lady Tigers missed two shots but came down with the rebound twice before Artavia Ford was fouled. Ford made one out of two shots to push TSU's lead back to two points with 12 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, ASU prepared to take the period's final shot, but Wright mishandled a pass along the sideline with less than two seconds remaining on the clock. An immediate foul on TSU's next possession sent Ford back to the line, where she iced the game with her sixth and seventh points of the evening.

TSU outrebounded Alabama State – one of the top rebounding teams in the conference – 43-27 in the game. Wright, who averages 7.6 rebounds per contest, was limited to one Saturday.

The Lady Tigers return to action Monday when they host Alabama A&M. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
