HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University finished in a third place at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship that concluded Sunday.
Miriam Pierre took home the most outstanding field performer honors with 28 points in three events, winning the discus and javelin events and placing second in the women's hammer throw. Pierre's performance contributed to TSU's 60.5-point margin (133.5 to 73) over Mississippi Valley for third place.
Alabama State won its eighth consecutive outdoor championship.
TSU HIGHLIGHTS
Pierre won her second gold medal in as many days, claiming the discus throw event with a toss of 47.96 meters. Kenya Wheeler of Grambling (46.28m) was second, and in third was LaToya Gilding of Jackson State (46.23m).
TSU's Breana Dockery overtook the field over the final 100 meters of the women's 400-meter dash, winning the gold (54.14 seconds). Takara Coleman of Prairie View (54.39) was second, and Mississippi Valley's Najee Green (54.51) was third.
Alexis Gray of Texas Southern earned a silver medal with a time of 23.99 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Kaila Lewis of Alabama State won the event with a time in 23.69, while Takara Coleman (24.05) of Prairie View took third.
The Lady Tigers dominated the women's javelin event, taking the top three spots. Winning the gold was Pierre (39.54m). In second was Ellena Torres (34.88m), and Breanca Woods took home third with a toss of 32.83m.
In the shot put event, Shamiya Blake claimed the bronze medal with a throw of 14.19 meters. Jackson State's Latoya Gilding cleared 14.96 meters to win the event, edging out silver medalist Kenya Wheeler (14.33m) of Grambling State.
Pierre also took home silver in the hammer throw on the first day of the championships. Her throw of 49.98 meters finished second behind Jackson State's Ky'Bria Spell, who set a new SWAC record with a throw of 52.67 meters. Furqani al-Amin of Grambling (47.84m) finished third.
