GRAMBLING, La. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University remained undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference play after defeating Grambling State by a score of 15-2 Friday.
The 15 runs scored and 19 base hits by Texas Southern marked a season high for the visiting Lady Tigers (13-6-1), who improved to 4-0 in SWAC play to remain atop the conference's West Division standings.
A'Leccia Bell came into the game as a pinch hitter and ended up leading the TSU bats, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. She had an RBI single in the fifth inning and accounted for three of TSU's six runs in the seventh with a bases-loaded double that plated Sierra Valdez, Emma Ortiz, and Tevanae Tate.
Jasmin Fulmore pitched a complete game to pick up the win in the circle for Texas Southern, improving her season record to 3-2. She struck out three batter while allowing only three hits. Grambling's only real success against Fulmore was a two-RBI double by Allye Hartley in the first inning that scored two unearned runs.
The home team was unable to do much damage to Fulmore for the remainder of the game. She gave up only one hit after the first inning, and retired 11 straight batters between the second and fifth innings. Fulmore induced 16 groundball outs Friday, compared to just one flyball out.
Meanwhile, the visiting Lady Tigers provided more than enough offense to insure TSU remained undefeated. Valdez and Terren Vinson each knocked three hits in the game, with Valdez pushing her batting average up to .404, which leads the team.
Ebony Wiltz and Danielle Sonnier each knocked two RBIs for Texas Southern, with Sonnier driving in her two runs on a pinch-hit double in the sixth. Wiltz' two-RBI single in the fourth provided the game-winning RBIs when Jocilynn Ellis scored from third, followed by Vinson coming home from second.
The Lady Tigers conclude their series with Grambling with a doubleheader Saturday, with the teams set to begin play at noon.
