HOUSTON – Texas Southern University's Lady Tigers claimed a share of their third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season basketball championship Saturday with a comeback 58-46 win over Southern.
Joyce Kennerson scored a game-high 16 points, including 12 after halftime, to key TSU's second-half comeback that saw the Lady Tigers outscore the Jaguars 40-21.
Chynna Ewing scored 12 points and tallied eight rebounds and five assists for the Lady Tigers (20-9, 14-4 SWAC), while teammate Artavia Ford came off the bench to chip in 10 points and five rebounds.
TSU finished tied for first place with Grambling State. The two teams split their season series, with each team winning at home, but Grambling held the tiebreaker advantage on point differential, and will enter the Toyota SWAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
The Lady Tigers of TSU claim the No. 2 seed, and will host in-state rival Prairie View A&M at Texas Southern's Health & Physical Education Arena on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with the men's team scheduled to host Alabama State in the second game of the postseason doubleheader.
Samantha Duncan scored 12 points to lead Southern (13-13), which finished conference play in fourth place with an 11-7 season.
The Jaguars held the Lady Tigers to 16 percent shooting (5 of 31) from the floor in the first half as Southern built a 25-18 lead. TSU turned the tables in the third quarter as the Lady Tigers shot 55 perent (6 of 11), while holding Southern to 17 percent shooting (2 of 12) and out scoring their visitors 24-8.
Saturday's win also marked the first time since 1982 the Lady Tigers have won 20 regular season games.
Senior post Shamiya Brooks pulled in eight rebounds and scored two points in her final regular season game with the Lady Tigers.
