HOUSTON, TX— Texas Southern dropped the final game of its weekend series against Southern University, falling 5-3 Sunday afternoon at MacGregor Park, as the Jaguars completed the sweep.

Right-hander Braziel got the start for the Tigers and opened strong, retiring the side in order in the first inning with one strikeout and two routine outs to the outfield.

Kelton Phillips led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle, but was caught stealing shortly after. TSU was unable to capitalize further in the inning.

Southern broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third when T. Bates delivered a two-run double to left field, giving the Jaguars a 2-0 lead. The Tigers limited the damage with solid infield defense, including a key stop by Flores to prevent another run from scoring.

Phillips put TSU on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Braziel pitched deep into the game, reaching 112 pitches before being relieved by Maynard in the seventh. Lucionni took over in the eighth as the Jaguars extended their lead to 5-2.

The Tigers mounted a late push in the ninth, plating one run, but ultimately fell short as Southern held on for the 5-3 win.

Texas Southern will look to bounce back in its next outing as it continues conference play.
