BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern University guard Joyce Kennerson claimed her fourth Player of the Week award of the season Tuesday after leading the Lady Tigers to weekend sweep of Alabama A&M and Alabama State. She shared the honor this week with Grambling's Shakyla Hill.

Joyce Kennerson averaged 29.5 points in leading the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University to a weekend sweep of Alabama A&M and Alabama State. The junior from Port Arthur, Texas (Memorial) shot 42 percent (15 of 36) from the field during TSU's two games, and made 78 percent (25 of 32) of her free throw attempts. Kennerson also averaged 2.0 assists per contest.

Kennerson's week also included another milestone as she became only the third player in TSU women's basketball history to score 1,500 career points. She accomplished the feat with a 3-point basket to open the fourth quarter in Saturday's win over Alabama A&M; the 3-pointer gave her 25 for the game and landed her on 1,500 points exactly.

By the end of Saturday's game, Kennerson had scored 31 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, and was 11-of-15 from the free throw line. It was Kennerson's sixth game this season in which she scored 30 or more points.

In Monday's win over Alabama State, Kennerson scored 28 points, which included a 14-of-17 showing at the free throw line (82.4 percent).

Kennerson is chasing the TSU's all-time scoring records held by Nerissa Redo (2,221 points, 1977-81) and Keena Williams' (1,583, 1983-87). Kennerson (1,534 career points) is within 50 points of Williams' mark, which is also the school's all-time record for points in the NCAA women's basketball era.

After having led the nation in scoring for more than a month this season, Kennerson is currently ranked No. 2 in all of the NCAA's Division I, trailing only Iowa's Megan Gustafson.
