History
GULFPORT, Miss. – Lanay Carr's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh allowed TSU to advance in the SWAC Softball Tournament by virtue of a 4-3 win over Grambling State on Wednesday night.
Playing in a win-or-go-home situation, both teams were forced to back to their hotels after lightning delayed the game two minutes after the first pitch. As a result, play was halted for eight hours until 6:30 p.m. Once the teams returned to action, it took a while for runs to come as Grambling State struck first as a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases in the fourth. A sac fly gave them a 1-0 lead in the fourth but TSU persevered and threw out a runner at home and forced a pop fly to end the threat.
The lead was brief for Grambling State as Carr opened the fourth with a leadoff single and stole second with one out. Penelope Saenz rewarded Carr for her efforts with an RBI triple followed by Destiny Menchaca's sac fly for a 2-1 margin. Back-to-back singles from Karisma Garcia and Melonie Guardiola led to a 3-1 score for TSU.
Unfortunately, the momentum went back to GSU in the fifth as an RBI triple coupled with a throwing error led to a 3-3 tie. TSU relied on its defense from that point as they caught the leadoff runner stealing for Grambling State in the sixth. In the seventh, GSU continued to battle with a leadoff single but Carr made the catch of the night crashing into the center field fence while somehow still holding on to the ball. The leadoff runner advanced to third after the next batter but Kylie Wilson forced an inning-ending groundout.
Marissa Martinez led the bottom of the seventh off with a hard-hit double to right and moved over to third on Wilson's well-placed sac bunt. Marisa Perla hit into a fielder's choice to get on base which set up Carr's game-winning single to right center.
Wilson, Carr and Martinez all had two hits as Wilson and Martinez finished 2-for-3. Wilson went the distance again on the mound as she improved to 9-9 on the season.
TSU will play either Alabama State of Florida A&M tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
