Texas Southern women’s basketball found themselves on the positive side of a late run as a 10-4 surge over the final 4:24 moved them past Alabama State 67-64 Monday night inside the H&PE Arena.
The first quarter was a tight affair with little separation on the scoreboard as there were a total of four lead changes between both teams en route to a 13-all tie. However, the second quarter was a different story as ASU took advantage of four turnovers and near-perfect shooting (4-of-6) as it fueled a 13-4 run during the first four minutes.
Down 30-17, the Tigers fought back with a vengeance as the half came to a close as Ataiya Bridges sparked an 8-2 run with four points. Jala Buster’s trey sent TSU into the half down 32-25.
Bridges was a one-woman wrecking crew in the third quarter as she scored seven of the first nine points for TSU as they trailed 37-34 with seven minutes remaining. TSU was also the aggressor offensively as they shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line during that span to get back into the contest. The contest was evenly played from that point as TSU trailed 44-41 after Bridges’ layup with 4:18 left.
ASU upped the lead to 46-41 after a Jada Crawford putback but Jada Perry answered with a huge three-pointer off Shalexxus Aaron’s assist. ASU would answer back with a layup but Aaron went coast-to-coast for a layup as TSU trailed 48-46. The track meet would continue as ASU scored another layup but TSU couldn’t capitalize with a turnover on the ensuing possession. After trading turnovers over the final 31 seconds, TSU would end the quarter on a positive note as Jala Buster was fouled on a defensive rebound. She connected on 1-of-2 free throws with four seconds left as TSU trailed 50-47 entering the final quarter.
ASU would convert on 1-of-2 free throws to begin the fourth quarter for a 51-47 lead. Once again, a track meet ensued as every time TSU would score, ASU was right there to answer as the deficit grew to 55-49 before a Buster free throw at the 8:36 mark.
TSU turned the intensity up once again with a 10-4 run over the next 3:20 as four Tigers would score to knot the contest at 57-all with six minutes left. TSU would miss the go-ahead layup and ASU was fouled on its next attempt and moved ahead 59-57 after a pair of free throws with 5:19 on the clock. ASU would add another free throw but Andriana Avent showed up at the perfect time with six points over the next 40 seconds to give TSU a 63-60 lead. ASU answered with a layup in the paint but TSU kept battling as Jada Perry was fouled on an offensive rebound with 2:55 left. Perry hit 1-of-2 free throws as TSU led 64-62.
With 2:45 left, ASU was hit with a turnover but TSU couldn’t take advantage as ASU ended up tying it at 64-all at the 1:49 mark. Both teams was hit with the turnover bug over the next few seconds but TSU came out on the positive end as Avent scored for a 66-64 lead. ASU would commit another big turnover with 55 seconds left but TSU misfired on its next possession to keep ASU in the game.
