Softball Falls Twice On Day 2 Of Tourney Action

AUSTIN, Texas – Jordan McClain’s one-out RBI single back up the middle in the bottom of the seventh against Abilene Christian is the only run the Texas Southern softball team could push across the plate as the Tigers dropped a pair of games against Virginia Tech 8-0 in five innings and Abilene Christian 6-1.

The pair of games were during the second day of action in the Lone Star State Invitational hosted at Red & Charline McCombs Field on the campus of the Unversity of Texas.

Game 1 – Virginia Tech 8, Texas Southern 0 (five innings)
The Tigers ran into a buzzsaw during the morning’s first contest in the form of the 10th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies (10-4), who were coming off a 6-5 extra innings victory over Texas on Friday night.

The Hokies drove in six runs in a decisive third inning to break a 0-0 tie and would tack on two in the fourth before getting the Tigers out in order in the fifth to invoke the run-rule finish.

No TSU batter was able to reach second base the entire contest.

Game 2: Abilene Christian 6, Texas Southern 1
With the Tigers trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh, McClain stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. After taking a ball and missing a strike, McClain then pelted a ball back up the middle to drive in pinch runner Madison Griggs from second base.

The hit gave McClain two singles in the game and the Tigers a total of four. Unfortunately for TSU, nothing else could be pushed across the plate.

TSU also threatened in the bottom of the fifth when the Tigers manufactured a bases-loaded situation with one out, but a line out to left and a groundout to short ended the threat when the team was only down 3-0 at the time.
