FAMU Pulls Away In 4th Quarter For Win Over Women’s Basketball
A late lead by TSU failed to hold as Florida A&M went on a 17-2 fourth quarter run to claim a 66-55 road win at Texas Southern on Saturday night.
TSU (1-20, 1-9 SWAC) was without the services of Andriana Avent for the game otherwise FAMU (5-16, 3-7 SWAC) would not have been able to focus in on defense again Micah Gray, who was held to single-digit points (9) for the second straight contest.
Both teams were neck-and-neck in the second quarter but FAMU closed out the half on an 11-2 run to lead 27-19. TSU would cut it down to four late in the third quarter but Dylan Horton drained a three-pointer for a seven-point margin only to be answered by Micah Gray as TSU trailed 39-34 at the end of the third quarter.
FAMU led by eight to begin the fourth quarter but the TSU defense stepped up and sparked a 10-0 run as they claimed a 44-42 lead with 6:17 remaining. TSU had a chance to move ahead by two possessions but committed a turnover on its next possession and FAMU countered with a trey to lead 45-44. TSU would break down offensively from that point as they committed six turnovers to close out the half as FAMU took advantage to claim the wun.
What can’t be overlooked, though, is the play of Donterria Brown when the Tigers needed someone to step up and lead the team while the prolific scorers are being held in check. Brown turned in not only her first double-double of the season, but it was the first by any TSU women’s basketball player as she led the team in points (12) and rebounds (10).
With the win, FAMU got its first road win on the season despite TSU owning a massive 51-38 advantage in rebounds.
One thing that TSU must bring down in order to pull off a win in a close contest is the turnovers as the Tigers committed 18 while only forcing FAMU into 8.
Tania Lawson and Gray chipped in nine points each while Skye Greene added eight. Knight (9) and Jaida Belton (8) were battlers on the boards as they nearly collected double digit rebound totals.
Dylan Horton led FAMU with 17 points and was closely followed by Mide Oriyomi’s 16.
